A short animated introduction to Kit Essential and the magnetodynamic principle behind atraumatic tooth extraction.

Kit Essential introduction — animated overview of magnetodynamic periotomy
01 The clinical problem

Forceps and elevators
damage what we want to preserve

Tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures in dentistry, yet conventional instrumentation — forceps, dental elevators, levers — applies uncontrolled mechanical forces that systematically damage the alveolar bone. Buccal cortical plates, often only 0.5–1 mm thin, fracture under pressure. Roots break, especially in non-vital teeth. Soft tissues are traumatized.

In posterior sectors, access is limited and third molars frequently require extended osteotomies. Alternatives have their own constraints: continuous irrigation, longer operative times, bone cutting. Minimally invasive extraction and socket preservation remain difficult goals to achieve with conventional instrumentation.

02 The Essential approach

Magnetodynamic periotomy
without leverage

The Magnetic Mallet delivers a controlled impulse of over 300 kg in 50 microseconds — too fast to be perceived by the patient. Kit Essential leverages this impulse for magnetodynamic periotomy: the instrument enters the periodontal ligament space with a progressive wedge effect that widens the space around the root, without ever applying leverage forces on the alveolar walls.

No irrigation during this operative phase, no clinically relevant heat generation, no noise. Dry surgical field with high visibility throughout the procedure. Force is delivered by the device: constant, calibrated, operator-independent. The Baldi (2024) study found no statistically significant differences in outcomes between two different surgeons.

02

Six benefits
of atraumatic extraction

Four instruments. One controlled impulse. Measurable outcomes from independent peer-reviewed studies of magnetodynamic extraction.

01

Reduced operative time

Average extraction time of 3.5 minutes at power level 2 of 4 (Baldi 2024, 29 extractions). The maximum power level was never required across the case series.

02

Half the bone resorption

Molar bone loss: −22.3% with the Magnetic Mallet vs −44.3% with conventional technique (Menchini-Fabris 2022, p < 0.0001). Optimal socket preservation for immediate implant placement or natural healing.

03

Rapid learning curve

Immediate tactile and visual feedback. Force is calibrated by the device and constant. Operator-independent technique — Baldi (2024) found no statistically significant difference in outcomes between two different surgeons.

04

Dry surgical field

No irrigation required during this operative phase. Dry surgical field with high visibility throughout the procedure. No clinically relevant heat generation, no rotary noise.

05

Atraumatic for the patient

50-microsecond impulse: below the threshold typically perceived as vibration. No patient complaints were reported in the Clinicians Report 2024 evaluation. No continuous rotary vibration, no rotary handpiece noise.

06

Modular system

Scale from four (Essential) to eight (Pro) or twelve (Total) instruments by adding BLEXO extractors — Pathfinder for complex root morphologies or AngleFit for posterior sectors.

Each instrument is designed for a specific phase of magnetodynamic periotomy. The Extractor 1 → 2 → 3-RVS sequence covers complete 360° periotomy; the Third Molar Elevator completes luxation in posterior sectors.

01

Extractor 1

Slim profile · first periotomy
Extractor 1 — slim profile for first periotomy

Sharp and resistant. Slim profile for first periotomy: enters the periodontal ligament space and begins separating the ligament fibers. First instrument of the sequence — suitable for all tooth types, anterior to posterior.

02

Extractor 2

Concave · mesial/distal wedge
Extractor 2 — concave profile for mesial/distal wedge effect

Concave profile, reduced height. Works on the mesial or distal aspect of the tooth, creating a progressive wedge effect in the periodontal space. Paired with Extractor 3-RVS to cover both sides of the root.

03

Extractor 3-RVS (Reverse)

Reverse concave · 360° periotomy
Extractor 3-RVS Reverse — full 360° periotomy

Reverse concave profile. Paired with Extractor 2, it provides smooth access to both mesial and distal aspects, completing a full 360° periotomy around the root.

04

Third Molar Elevator

Posterior access · third molar luxation
Third Molar Elevator — designed for wisdom tooth luxation

Specifically designed for third molar luxation. Optimized geometry to access posterior sectors and mobilize the tooth after periotomy performed with Extractors 1, 2, and 3-RVS.

Together, the four instruments cover periotome, luxator, and elevator functions in a single magnetodynamic workflow. Power levels 1–2 of 4 are commonly used; level 3 may be used in selected cases. The 50-microsecond impulse is below the threshold typically perceived as vibration.

Common questions
about Kit Essential

What is Kit Essential and what is it used for?

Kit Essential is the four-instrument base configuration of the OSSEOTOUCH atraumatic extraction system, designed for the Magnetic Mallet. It includes Extractor 1, Extractor 2, Extractor 3-RVS (Reverse), and the Third Molar Elevator. Together they cover anterior, posterior, and third molar extractions through magnetodynamic periotomy: the controlled impulse enters the periodontal ligament space with a progressive wedge effect, mobilizing the tooth without applying leverage forces on the alveolar bone.

How does Kit Essential compare to piezosurgery for extractions?

Bennardo et al. (2023) compared the two techniques on 22 patients in a split-mouth design. Mean operative time was 544.9s with the Magnetic Mallet vs 901.0s with piezosurgery (p < 0.05), with equivalent healing and pain outcomes and no complications reported in either group. Unlike piezosurgery, the Magnetic Mallet does not require irrigation during this phase, does not generate clinically relevant heat, and does not cut bone.

How much alveolar bone is preserved with magnetodynamic extraction?

Significantly more than with conventional extraction. Menchini-Fabris (2022) measured −22.3% bone loss at molars with the Magnetic Mallet vs −44.3% with conventional technique (p < 0.0001) — half the resorption. Baldi (2024) confirmed ≈20% resorption at 3 months, comparable to techniques using bone graft biomaterials but without any added material.

How long does a Magnetic Mallet extraction typically take?

On average 3.5 minutes (range 2–7 min, Baldi 2024 case series, 29 extractions). The mean number of impulses is 7 (range 2–12) at power level 2 of 4. Power levels 1–2 are commonly used; level 3 may be used in selected cases; level 4 was not required across the case series.

Is the learning curve for Kit Essential steep?

No, but it requires a brief initial familiarization phase. Clinicians need to acquire confidence with the correct angle of attack and the choice of power level. Tactile and visual feedback is immediate, and force is delivered by the device. Baldi (2024) found no statistically significant differences in outcomes between two different surgeons.

Can third molars (wisdom teeth) be extracted with Kit Essential?

Yes. Kit Essential includes the Third Molar Elevator, specifically designed for luxation of third molars. For complex impacted third molars, the Pro configuration with AngleFit BLEXO adds four angled extractors that reach every aspect of posterior multi-rooted molars.

What's the difference between Essential, Pro, and Total configurations?

The system is modular. Essential (4 instruments) is the base kit. Pro (8 instruments) adds one BLEXO line — Pathfinder (4 straight extractors for curved roots, fractured apices, and impacted canines) or AngleFit (4 angled extractors for posterior sectors). Total (12 instruments) includes Essential + complete BLEXO (Pathfinder + AngleFit) for broad coverage of advanced clinical extraction scenarios.

Is Kit Essential FDA cleared and compatible with Magnetic Mallet handpieces?

The Magnetic Mallet is listed under FDA product code GEY (Class I surgical instrument motor/accessory, 21 CFR 878.4820). This category is 510(k)-exempt and subject to general controls; no premarket notification submission is required, and the device is legally marketed in the United States. The four Kit Essential instruments fit new-generation Magnetic Mallet handpieces and operate at power level 1–2 of 4.
